Baby teeth are temporary and most often fall out on their own. Their roots begin to resorb at the age of 3-4 years. And from 6-7 years they gradually fall out, and by 12-13 years they are completely replaced by permanent ones. This process is natural and, ideally, does not require outside intervention. However, in case of damage to the tooth or some diseases of the dentofacial system, its treatment or even removal may be required.
Main indications for the removal of a milk tooth:
- Damage by caries of more than 50-70% of its tissues.
- Development of periostitis, periodontitis, pulpitis.
- Impossibility of restoring the tooth with a filling or restoration.
- Formation of a large cyst on/under the root.
- Crack, fracture of the root or chipping of a significant segment of the tooth.
- Delayed loss, mobility of the tooth, which irritates the gums and causes pain.
The decision on the need for tooth extraction is made by the doctor. He first conducts a comprehensive dental diagnosis to assess the situation and consider the feasibility of treatment. But if the tooth treatment does not make sense (or is impossible), it should be removed.
It is important to understand that a child’s first visit to the dentist forms an impression that in many ways remains for life. That is why in our clinic, pediatric dentists perform procedures for children. They know how to turn the process into an exciting game to interest the child. And the use of anesthesia ensures the painlessness of the procedure.
Removal of milk teeth under anesthesia in children
Main stages of the procedure:
- Medical diagnostics.
- Anaesthetic.
- Tooth extraction.
- Processing the hole, if necessary – suturing.
- Stopping bleeding, applying a cotton swab.
At the diagnostic stage, the doctor collects anamnesis, sends parents with the child for hardware examinations (X-ray, orthopantomogram, etc.), selects an anesthetic with the optimal mechanism of action that does not cause side effects. After preparation, the main procedure is performed.
If the child feels anxious or has increased sensitivity to pain, anesthesia is performed in two stages. First, the dentist applies an anesthetic gel to the gums, which reduces sensitivity to the injection. Then, the main anesthetic is injected.
In cases with complications, sedation may be used. The child is immersed in a superficial drug sleep using mild sedatives.
The tooth is removed with special forceps. If the tooth is incomplete or has not erupted at all, a surgical operation is performed with dissection of the gums and subsequent suturing of the wound. After the tooth is removed, the doctor treats the hole or wound, stops the bleeding and applies a cotton swab. Moderate-strength antibiotics can be used to prevent infections.
After the procedure
General recommendations:
- Keep a cotton swab on the hole or wound for 30 minutes.
- Abstain from eating and drinking for 2-3 hours.
- Avoid solid food for 24 hours.
- Carefully brush your teeth for the first 3-5 days.
Depending on the complexity of the procedure and the child’s behavior, some complications may occur: severe bleeding from the hole/wound, significant swelling of the gums, persistent pain, significant fever, etc. If at least one of these symptoms appears, you should immediately consult a doctor for an additional examination.
Our pediatric dentists carefully prepare for the procedure and skillfully perform it, so such cases are extremely rare. After tooth extraction, the doctor provides clear recommendations for oral care, which prevents complications and promotes rapid healing of the gums.
